Help! I am running out of space/I am out of space in my account but I haven't added anything! |
Craig |
This can be a perplexing problem to some users, especially when they have not added anything to their account in a long time. One of the biggest problems with being over your disk quota is that new mail cannot be delivered because there's no space for it. In addition to showing you how to possibly correct the over-quota situation, at the end of the article we'll tell you how to set an alarm to warn you when you are approaching your quota.
There are usually 1 or 2 main causes for space to 'disappear' on its own.
STATS FILES
Each night, the server parses your raw logs and adds a little bit to the reports that are used by the "Site Statistics" tool in your Control Center. Over time, these can add up to a significant amount of space, especially if you have been a client for a while. Fortunately there is a way to recover some or all of this space:
- If you don't use stats at all, make use of the "Stats Manager" tool to disable reporting and recover the space. This will effectively disable the accumulation of stats and therefore the "Site Statistics" tool won't work. You can use the "Stats Manager" tool again to re-enable the reports if you like, and they will begin accumulating once more.
- If you don't want to delete all your stats, you can use the File Manager tool to selectively remove older files. You'll find the stats files in $domain-www/stats/www200X where 200X is the year. You can remove some or all of the files in these folders and they will no longer be available to the "Site Statistics" tool. This will also not stop the accumulation of stats for the future. This option is useful if you use the reports but don't need to keep the really old stuff.
EMAIL BUILDUP
Another possible cause is an accumulation of stored mail in your account. Mail does count against the storage allotment while it is stored on the server. Sometimes mail can accumulate because of an invalid rule in Mail Manager. "Double-forwarding" is often the culprit. This happens when you have Mailbox A forwarded to Mailbox B and Mailbox B forwards to somewhere else. Since mail will only be forwarded once, this is an illegal rule and the mail will stop forwarding at Mailbox B, resulting in a buildup of mail there.
To recover space used by e-mail, you can do one of two things:
- Download the mail with an e-mail client, or use the WebMail interface
- Delete the mailbox contents using File Manager
To delete the contents of a mailbox, you'll actually use File Manager and not Mail Manager. Mail Manager only deals with rules, and not actual content. To delete the mailbox use File Manager to navigate to $domain-mail and select "delete" next to the mailbox to wish to discard. Note: all mail in this mailbox will be deleted if you choose this option. If the mail in the box is important to you, use the first option (download the mail).
SETTING QUOTA ALARMS
In your Control Center, use the "Account Management" tool to set alarms for both disk and transfer quota usage. It's a good idea to set the alarm to around 80 or 90 percent of your quota maximum so that you have enough warning when you are getting close to your quota. The system will e-mail you if you have exceeded your alarm limit.
UPGRADING
If you've checked your account, and you really are using all that space your best option may be to upgrade. Use the Upgrade CP tool in your Control Center to do this.
If none of the above situations pertain to your account, please open a support ticket and will be glad to investigate for you. |
